Our mission

We believe the slopes belong to everyone.

Organized and operating as a 501(c)(3), Positive Altitudes was established in 2021 to increase the participation of kids from underrepresented communities in the sport of downhill skiing.

Across our 2022–2026 seasons, we partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Milwaukee, Big Brothers Big Sisters, COA Youth & Family Center, and Sunburst Ski Resort to provide over 1,000 ski lessons to more than 250 kids. Our program provides ski rental equipment, winter gear, dinner, and lessons, so cost is never the reason a kid misses out. We look forward to our sixth season in 2027.

Why skiing

What a season on the slopes gives a kid.

Skiing is so much more than a day out. Here's what our skiers take home with them.

Physical health

Great for cardiovascular health, balance, and coordination. It builds core and leg muscles and strengthens joints.

Builds confidence

Mastering the skill of skiing delivers the real experience of pride and accomplishment.

Appreciation for nature

Take in the beauty of the hill, surrounded by trees, clean air, and white snow glistening in the lights.

New friendships

Chairlift rides let kids meet new people and learn something new about whoever they're riding with.

Improves mood

The endorphins from a day of skiing deliver a genuine, mood-enhancing lift.

A stress break

Away from screens, phones, and stress at home and school: a healthy break to just be a kid.

A good night's sleep

A rigorous day on the slopes is the perfect recipe for a deep, restful night.

The whole hill

Seven reasons, one truth: a day on the slopes changes how a kid sees what they're capable of.

In their words

The impact, straight from the source.

What our skiers, mentors, and partners say about a season on the slopes.

When you set out to start this program, I'm not sure you understood the impact it would have on these kids. This is a life experience that may lead to job opportunities, confidence, lifelong physical fitness… There will come a point in their lives where they will fully realize the gift you've given them — and imagine all of the lives you enhanced when they pay it forward.

Thank you for this amazing program. Re'Yelle and I loved being able to ski together. She has pushed herself and really grown this year. She couldn't have done it without Positive Altitudes! You are the best. Thank you for making skiing attainable for youth like Re'Yelle!
